In the huts I've drunk some really good teas from mountain plants and I'm wondering if anyone has a recipe for such tea. It would also help if I at least knew the names of the good plants, then I could find pictures in a book.

In huts tea is usually bag style . Maybe if some cook throws in some herbs, but that's basically it. Too many hikers for it to be worth brewing homemade tea. Otherwise about teas you could know something here: http://www.cajnisvet.si/.

I don't know if this is accurate. As far as I know, they diligently collect herbs in the mountains and also bring some things from the home garden in the valley. Herbs are quickly gathered, especially if you know where and how to pick them. It's also more cost-effective for them. In a hut for example they brew up to 20 liters of tea, do you know how many filters that is? And if you think some huts have really big tea urns.... They collect everything from spruce tips, juniper tips, juniper berries, wild strawberries, wild cherries, elderflowers and elderberries. They also add bilberry leaves and dried bilberries. Yellow rattle, wild thyme definitely not missing, lots of aroma from wild strawberry and raspberry leaves. Sometimes birch leaves too. And of course nettles. Probably I missed something, hope some hut keeper will show up and write more. Ah, and recently I noticed they were collecting lichens too. In autumn they collect rose hips too.

My mom picks and brews such mountain tea: wild thyme, gentian and mountain speedwell (veronica). These three grow together in large quantities on Velika Planina. Just before the cows are driven up you can pick a year's supply of tea in half an hour. Dry the plants at home, easiest on a hot attic... Otherwise I was once at a lecture on the culture of drinking mountain tea. We had practical exercises too, so I remembered it well. First you need plenty of time, you have to sit in a mountain hut and best if you've already sorted out accommodation. Order a cup of tea, the hotter the better. So you don't burn yourself, pour in a sip of schnapps. Best to have your own, homemade is always best. Then slowly, without haste, drink two sips of tea. Smile at everyone present so they see how good the tea is and with the most elegant gesture pour in a new sip of schnapps. From there the idea is clear. You have to make sure you always drink two sips and pour only one, otherwise you'll never finish.

On the Mali and Veliki Planini you really have a wide choice of medicinal herbs. Even when the livestock is already grazing, you can still find some. These days there's a lot of centaury, wild thyme, St. John's wort, speedwell, and buttercup is still available. This year I was lucky and picked some mountain moss (Icelandic lichen). For older men, clubmoss is already growing. Arnica has already almost finished blooming. Regards.
