Monte Crostis 1894m and Chiavals 2098

Over the weekend we ventured into the wilderness of the Carnic Alps. Along the Bela valley I turned past Pontebba into Val Aupa to Pradis, where I turned left and up to Val Alba (nature reserve). You can also get there from Pontebba to Moggio and then north to Pradis.
Since the day was long, we opted for a long detour to the bivouac via path 450, where the path goes slightly downhill through the forest, then branches right past the stream up a steep hill to the former Crostis pasture. Only an old nearly ruined hut testifies to it. Up to here the path was quite overgrown, as it seems very rarely visited. Then to Vidus saddle and left along Alta Via Cai Moggio (great views) to Crostis summit, then down to Fonderis saddle below Zuc dal Bor and via path 425 above crazy sheer ledges to bivouac Bianchi. All in all it took us 6 long and sweaty hours due to the sultry day. This circular route is demanding also due to elevation changes, as we often descend and then climb again and ... Bivouac is a red tin for 9 people with some blankets, a couple of minutes below it on path 428 is a mini spring with water tasting like wild thyme.
Next day we headed to Chiavals summit and circled it, so first to the saddle on NW side and then down S side.
View was fantastic, from Sernia and Grauzaria, Amariane, Muzci, Julian Alps, neighbor Zuc dal Bor, Zermula, Cavalla... Then just down to the valley to the car, where with a bit of luck you'll find a nice emerald pool, just listen to the murmur on the left.

Crazy remote and soul-binding, two days lived in Trent style!

We recommend!

If we have nothing else we have plenty of sun, well sun was plentiful in the Carnic Alps these days too. Starting point in Val Alba valley, small parking right below road barrier. First along flat path about 10 min, then left up modest trail through forest and soon back on road, which we soon leave for unmanned hut Vualt. Neat hut with spacious day room and some modest bunks in attic. One could linger here, but we continue, again on road to remains of former barracks, and path 425 to junction below Cjasut dal Sior, there right and across wide panoramic area Crete di Gleris, meanwhile viewing crumbling military objects until small saddle, where directly up following marks to Chiavals summit. Views extraordinary, we sit, snack, then down SE ridge to bivouac Bianchi, short stop again and nice mule track back to Alba valley and start. Extremely nice circular tour, perfect for these beautiful autumn days with no snow in mountains yet. Highly recommend.
Access from Pontebba over Cereschiatis pass to Aupa valley, or from Mužac (Moggio Udinese) to Val Aupa to Pradis.
Monte Chiavals is not a difficult-to-access mountain, but it is extremely panoramic1
