Monte Bucher (Pucherspitze) 2023

The morning chill was quite pleasant and I didn't bother at all looking for the old hunter's trail leading to the notch on the east side of Velika Ruše. I went straight up; as long as there was beech forest it went smoothly, of course, then I got into the rhododendrons and a bit higher finally found the old hunter's trail that brought me to the edge from where I spotted it. There followed a descent along a narrow sloping ledge left downward, which brought me to the gully outlet. For the descent into the gully I used a rope wedged behind a rock corner, then after some 150-200 meters of descent down the gully I turned right onto a wide sloping ledge rising up under the towers above Škrbina Belega potoka. Finally I reached the rhododendron-overgrown saddle from which I descended a few meters onto the steep rhododendron ridge along which I went north, i.e. to the summit part of Bucher. Good that the rhododendrons here are already quite dwarfed, otherwise I would have tangled nicely with them. When the rhododendrons ended I descended from the ridge to the west side and continued under the summit, where behind some edge a difficult pitch III stopped me. I had a rope but no one to belay and decided to turn, as the exposure there is really big. There followed a return to the other subpeak, where I sat a bit, then descended back through rhododendrons and climbed the northern tower Špica above Škrbina Belega potoka (1986), just for compensation. When I descended to the rhododendron saddle, on the east side I saw the "chamois trail" leading down toward Škrbina Belega potoka. I tried it, because if the traverse succeeded I would shorten the return a lot. And it went; to Škrbina still some 10 m up, then just down to Mangartska planina, where the upper part was pure poetry, lower "hell" down the slippery gully and rhododendrons (used rope at one spot), and under the "boulder" crossed rhododendrons to the right and finally reached beech forest. To the planina then just a stroll. More about this remote part can be found on: the M&M website and on: http://www.primorskestene.com/?mod=catalog&action=view&action_id=127&language=en&lang=en (south side) For experienced hikers used to pathless terrain and with a sense of orientation, easier accesses from Remšendal but also much longer.

I first climbed Monte Bucher on 22.8.2003 and repeated the ascent the next year together with my wife. Without descriptions or information I explored this wild world and found a different approach than described on the MM page and that's the charm of it, as someone described me in PV: alone with the mountains and own thoughts. Pictures unfortunately on my slides, which I have been scanning for a long time, but none yet. Lp!
