Maltatal Valley / Maltatal

Yesterday we retirees of PD for Selška dolina Železniki drove to Austria—more precisely to the Maltatal Valley /Maltatal. We had to set off quite early. They picked up the trio of hikers in Kranj. Then through the Karavanke tunnel to Austria. The road leads to the heart of the Hohe Tauern. Before the mountain road into the valley you pay an entrance fee of 7 euros per person. Then the road takes us through numerous tunnels—also before the toll barrier. Traffic through these tunnels is regulated even with traffic lights. We waited quite some time down there until the green light came on. Interesting is some tunnel with bends. Not all tunnels are even lit. Then we drive to a large parking lot in front of the two-hundred-meter-high dam of the reservoir lake. Behind the dam is a huge artificial lake. High mountains surround it. The higher ones are already covered with snow. We go for a panoramic walk around the lake. Finally we decide to go towards the Osnabrusker hut. We ended the hike about half an hour before the hut because the return time was pressing. Still it was nice. It went slowly of course because the terrain is soggy, rocks wet, grass high, and in many places water running along the path. In between we snacked at one private hut—sadly it was closed. We enjoyed magical views of the lake and surrounding mountains which sparkled magically in the afternoon sun. So we had another nicely spent pensioners' Tuesday.

After two years we retirees from PD Škofja Loka group Pondeljkovci, who somehow divide into Brzeče and Polžke, went here. Had to go on the path at six in the morning. Caught the last week when the path is still open. They close the path already on Monday 27.10. Tunnels are closed so snow doesn't bury them. Will open again next spring. Had a nice autumn day. Forests dressing in autumn colors. Surprisingly little water. Waterfalls along the whole path by the lake are smaller. On the path by the lake we got a bit lost, not the most praiseworthy. It happens. Fortunately can't stray. Didn't go to the hunting hut above the lake anyway. Still had fun. Bye!

In the head of the reservoir there is still that hut - we didn't go all the way there.13
