Ljubelj Hut - Polna peč - Zelenica - Palec

Yesterday I set out on this trail, which although not marked is very prominent and, I could say, airy on some sections. In the shady Austrian basins there is still some snow but nothing that couldn't be bypassed. On the most difficult passages the excellent path markers have newly attached steel cables. At certain places however you have to be very careful because the trail is really narrow and precipitous in places, so only an experienced mountaineer should attempt this trail. I didn't meet anyone on the trail. Otherwise let me say that whoever sets out on this trail will be rewarded with wonderful views of the Zelenica valley, Begunjščica and the Austrian part of the Karawanks.zavijanje z očmi

When posting the text about the concentration camp there was an unpleasant mistake, the text of course refers to the first picture and not to the Dom
na Ljubelju. Sorry for the error.

I think this path is one of the nicest I've ever walked. I went along it a month ago and just yesterday I wanted to repeat it, but at eight in the morning the weather at Ljubelj was quite miserable and I changed my mind. You probably went later? I regretted it in the afternoon too because I didn't go. I think it could be done in winter too.

Today we ascended from Ljubelj along the old road to the Ljubelj Hut. Since snow starts at 1200m currently the road is not suitable for sledding. From the hut we continued towards Polna peč (1503m) to which the path is quite well trodden. The view from the top with nice weather is unique.

Today, August 12th, my colleague and I went on the trail described above. The hut at Ljubelj was closed. To Polna peč we needed a good half hour. The trail is nice, easy and Peč has views. To Zelenica there are some critical and dangerous spots, but the excellent mountaineers have secured them well with steel cables. The trail to Zelenica is very scenic and varied and in some places attractive and very demanding.
At Zelenica the hut was open and as always the always good-natured caretaker was in it. On the way towards the junction for Palec we met some older female and male hikers, of course in good spirits and full of new impressions, as they were returning from Stol.
In Suho rušje a VERY strong wind awaited us, it was tossing us around. The wind didn't let up for a moment and we had quite some problems with it especially on the way to the summit. But we made it anyway.
I think the trail to Palec is suitable only for experienced and trained hikers, prerequisite is that they don't have vertigo. And some sense of orientation is also good to have

I was on Palec on August 10 via the usual trail from Zelenica. Although the trail is not marked, the path is clearly visible. But at the saddle between Zelenjak and Palec (where there is a fallen sign for the border area) I continued straight ahead and when I thought I was at the top of Palec, I saw that it was Zelenjak. Of course on the way back I also stepped onto Palec (about 30 min. from the top of Zelenjak). Both hills are almost equally high. Neither one nor the other seemed demanding to me and the trail not exposed. But on the way back towards Zelenica (towards the end of the scree) I found a huge amount of gentians. I've never seen so many on any trail so far. Really incredible. Just to look at and photograph.

These gentians attract me, since I don't have them in my photo collection yet. But I'm curious about the trail's difficulty, difficult or very difficult.

Depends on the person. To me the trail from Ljubelj via Zelenica to Zelenjak and then to Palec didn't seem long, demanding or exposed. It's true though that every hiker would rate the trail differently.zavijanje z očmi

To me, the summit parts of Palec and Zelenjak are worthy of all respect. The last part of the ascent to Palec is a narrow, slippery path, plus one rocky step over which you have to climb a bit. You have to be even more careful on the descent. Zelenjak is more compact i.e. less loose scree, but on the ascent you need to use hands, and you have to watch not to miss the right direction and get "stuck", as I did myself...zadrega
Good luck!

If the ascent to Palec seems too difficult, you can end the trip at Žleb. The gentians grow at the foot of Palec, so even before Žleb.

When I read in the guidebook, it mentions that there is some grade II climbing in places, which at the moment still seems too hard for me. Is perhaps the unmarked trail that branches off the marked one at Vrtača and leads directly to Palec any easier. It is true that we fulfill our expectations if amid all the beauties of nature along the trail we also conquer the summit itself.

As Biser gora already said, to see gentians you don't need to go to the top of Palec or Zelenjak. The unmarked trail that branches off the marked one at Vrtača is easy and trodden and takes you also past the meadow with gentians. The trail becomes demanding only from the Žleb saddle onwards i.e. the last summit part of Palec and Zelenjak. At this saddle, where the view opens to the Austrian side, you can then decide to still ascend to Palec, or rather turn back and have a nice hike in the wonderful mountain environment even without conquering the summit. nasmeh

To not open a new thread, right here. Yesterday I did a circular trail Ljubelj - pass - ridge of Ljubeljščica - Zelenica and return via the former ski slope. The trail mostly dry, firm and scenic. Along the trail and on the slopes a lot of flowers, some names I know some not. In photos no. 57, 75, 82 and 148 the names are missing and I ask experts for the flower names. Thanks. Around Zelenica, 15.7.2021

From Podljubelj I headed to the Ljubelj Hut and from there continued to Polna Peč, where the sun awaited me. I took a couple of minutes, then continued along the Ljubeljščica ridge towards Three Angels. Parts of the ridge are exposed and some spots have protections. After finishing the harder part, the wet undergrowth put me in a bad mood as I wasn't shod properly for it. So I went a bit slower and more carefully.

At Triangel I finished the ridge and descended lower to the path to Vrtača. Soon I branched right towards Žleb, where I spotted some hikers. Next I went for Palec; need to watch where the path goes, spot crampon marks and the summit approach isn't too difficult. Met hikers at the top, greeted nicely, then they descended ahead of me. Took some pics, then followed them to Zelenjak, which is well marked with cairns (if you follow).

We stopped, they went along Vrtača scree around the corner to Vrtača, I towards home at Zelenica. Got there quick, drank coffee, refreshed and wished for lunch at pl. Preval. Headed towards Begunjščica, past Roblek turnoff to V. Vrh. Then along the ridge, past sheepfold over Kalvarija to Preval. Lunch great, cviček too, rested a bit, then through Born tunnels back to Podljubelj.

It was nice.

Since I wanted sun, I went from Ljubelj to the hut and then along the Ljubeljščica ridge to Triangel. Descended a bit and continued over Suho Ruševje to Palec. And since shade in the valley didn't appeal, from Palec I descended the ridge to the last Mož. From there down the steep scree to the marked path to Zelenica, which was in shade all day.zavijanje z očmi
