We used a wonderful Sunday for an MTB ascent to Johannishütte (2121 m). We drive past Hermagor to Kotschach-Mauthen and then via Lienz to Matrei and Ostirol. From there by bike into the wonderful Virgen valley to Hinterbichl, 17 kilometers away, where about 500 m past the village we turn right into the Dorfertal valley. Soon the road starts steeply ascending and continues almost all the way to the top. The ascent is 8 km long. Everything is rewarded at the top at the hut with beautiful views especially on Grosvenediger. We return on the same path to the junction, where we also look at the Islitzer pasture, where there are also nice waterfalls in its surroundings. We return to the junction for Dorfertal and turn onto the bike path (MTB only - macadam) no. 22. The path runs all along the Isel river all the way to Virgen, where we then join back onto the main road and drive on it back to the starting point of this wonderful tour.
