Today's hike from Valentin Stanič's home below Ježa to Ježa: snow just a sample at the start, on Ježa about 15 cm. The path then led us also to Grad, the hill on the border with Italy. On the top 20-40 cm in drifts. Nice sunny day spent on the snow.

Yesterday the Škofja Loka hikers visited Kolovrat. From Tolmin we drove to the village of Volče and to the Solarie saddle, where we viewed the open-air museum. There we have a little house that serves as an observation point. Next to it are panels informing us about the history of Kolovrat. Above the house is a viewpoint. On the other side of the parking lot at the Salarie saddle there is a series of shooting trenches and shelters that they have cleaned, renovated and arranged as an open-air museum. There we even have a logbook box. It's really pleasant to walk through the entire system of these trenches and shelters - it even goes a bit underground. We concluded that the soldiers must have stayed quite dry, as the tunnels and passages are narrow. These tunnels and shelters overlooked the valley below and had an excellent position for defense and observation. Below this ridge during Yugoslavia there stood a quite large guard post with accompanying buildings - the watchtower still stands alone. The guard post and accompanying buildings seem to have been abandoned at the formation of the state of Slovenia or earlier - I don't know and today they are just ruins.

We continued walking almost the entire Kolovrat ridge. Somehow it goes partly along the Italian-Slovenian border. We went down on the Italian side past the monument to the first fallen Italian soldier on Kolovrat. Along the asphalted road on the Italian side you can see several caverns, but they are not accessible. Via Ježa we went to the Valentin Stanič hut, which they opened and served us just for us. A new asphalted road leads to the hut. It seems that this season the hut was not open due to renovation of the hut and road.

In the area between Soča and the Friulian plain rises the luxuriously scenic Kolovrat ridge. It reaches up to 1243 m. It consists of a series of ridges about 4 km long. This area above Tolmin was occupied by the Italian army during WWI and they built an extensive defense system: command and observation posts, machine gun and artillery positions, taverns and a network of shooting trenches. Today these remains are arranged as an open-air museum, which is part of the Walk of Peace and along the entire ridge we encounter signs - Walk of Peace.

I know that it has already been written about this and other terms, but since there are slips or other kinds of mistakes, I just pointed it out. There are words that are often used and their usage is close to us, and others where mistakes happen. Nothing bad, the main thing is that with common efforts we reach new insights.

So after two years we are back here - this time with another group of retirees from PD Škofja Loka - we are the Monday group. But we didn't walk any less than the Thursday group two years ago. Start was at the saddle below Livški Kuk. We walked the entire Kolovrat ridge, which is somehow about four km long. We move all the time somehow on the border between the countries. The path is nice, a bit up, a bit down. All along there are signs that this is the Path of Peace. In between there is also a sign on which peak of Kolovrat we are. We stopped at the bivouac and the monument to the first fallen Italian soldier here in WWI. We ended the hike at Grad - that's the final peaklet of the Kolovrat ridge, where there is an open-air museum. We walked through these defensive positions. Here was the Italian military command of this sector in WWI.

Brane, did you look at the monument when Giuseppe Zanuso killed himself. The monument to the first fallen is at the Solarje pass! But it was here that the breakthrough of the Austro-Hungarian army began.

This time I really didn't see it. It's about soldier Riccardo di Giusta - he fell on 24 May 1915. I photographed it two years ago.
