From Lepena to Krn (2 days)

Hello all mountaineers!

I'm heading on a two-day trip with my dear (we're not very experienced hikers). Somehow I picked Lepena as the starting point, then Krn Lakes; further I ask you for some suggestion how to route a two-day trip (about 5h walking daily), to visit some not too steep summit and overnight in one of the huts..

Thanks to all for replies and wish nice summer holidays!

One of many options e.g. this: From the lake to Vratca (Bogatinsko sedlo) then to the hut on Komna (but since that's almost too little for one day you can jump from Bogatinsko sedlo to e.g. Lanževica). Second day from Komna over planina Govnjač to Mahavšček then Bogatin and from Bogatin back to Vratca to the lake and valley.
Another option first day from the lake to Velika Baba then overnight in the hut at Krn Lake. Second day ascent to Krn and back to Lepena. Haven't been to Velika Baba yet but elsewhere no notable "precipices".
Could list more but check the maps and decide what and how much you want.
Nice tour to you!

Thanks a lot for the reply! After looking at the map, it seemed too much to plan for the first day: Lepena-Krn lakes-Krn-Krn lakes. Am I wrong? Can it be done in ca. 6-7 hours of more family-like walking?
Another option is to overnight on Krn (Gomiščkovo zavetišče)...

I think it can be done even with "family walking" to reach Krn on the first day and then back to the lake. Books say 5 hours from Lepena to the summit and ca. 2 hours back. But you can reach the summit much earlier. Recently I took 3h 15min from Lepena to the summit. But in five hours, in my opinion, you get there "easy".
Go boldly.

We did this route (once long ago) like this: afternoon from Lepena to hut at Krnsko jezero - there we strolled in the afternoon and evening and sat by the lake. Slept in that hut. Early morning to summit then same day back to valley. Nice trip!

Here's my experience: we first day started from Lepena to Krnsko jezero then to Krn arrived just before 13. Slept up there, but can get down same day no problem if start early enough. Enjoy, it's nice! nasmeh

Almost forgot Krn this winter from Lepena but never too late. Skis carried from home Klementa Juga in Lepena to upper cargo cable station then on with some ski removals past planina Duplje. From lake onwards solid snow cover but not enough ice on lake to cross like last winter. Snow mostly refrozen but not hard, some new remnants; sun shone only third power despite forecast, no fear of strong melt. To Krnska škrbina in steepest part on foot, someone made steps days ago but downhill erased them so not much help. Went without gear. Maybe others can't so at least ice axe good to have. From škrbina to summit need to search passages a bit, little snow but ice layers showing, remember Christmas rain which can be dangerous (today someone fatal in Turski žleb). Of course first to Ervin Gomišček shelter. Someone forgot to lock door, no big damage. Then to summit, sat a bit, no special warmth so at 13.00 skied to škrbina. Snow didn't release much, better below škrbina, enjoyable skiing to Polje then soft avalanche to lake. Right edge of lake slide to east shore then to branch for Bogatinsko sedlo. Around planina Duplje all bare. On return signed winter room of hut, climbed to snow meter which shows poor picture, just over 30 cm snow. Skis another few 100m below cable then to backpack and painful descent to Lepena which wasn't so bad. From lake to summit excellent, south side to Kuhinja mostly bare, from lake to Lepena also mostly bare.

Igor nice you enjoyed..would comment only your pic of cable..I'm absolutely against via ferratas but this wire comes handy in winter...nowhere on Krnska dangerous in winter and even if soft everywhere there icy and there I once slipped down...

Otherwise gotta use last snow.

Hello,
Interested in current conditions on path from Krn Lake over Bogatin Saddle to Komna. Possible also without skis/crampons?

Thanks and congrats!

Nice morning was forming as we went past Krn lake towards summit.
Forest path was boring for us,cause no views but from cargo cableway on nicer.Warm weather excited us,even more the little spring by path. That very welcome for refreshment. On summit slight cloudiness, path nice.
Spent nice day and soaked tired legs in Soča.
