Brinica / Monte Briniza

Yesterday I went on a hike with the Škofja Loka mountaineers, of which I am also a member, to Brinica (Monte Briniza) in Italy. This is the central peak of the Stol Ridge on the Italian side between Kobarid and Gemona.

We gathered enough for a whole bus. Two experienced club guides led us. The drive to the starting point alone is interesting. By bus we drive to Tarvisio in Italy and then before Lago del Predil to the Predel border crossing into Slovenia to Posočje and from there back to Italy to the starting point. We hike on path 710. The path is nice, just continuously somewhat steep, the gentle incline doesn't ease until the ridge. To the ridge to the saddle we hike all the way in the shade of deciduous forest. To here we took about two hours. Here we rested well for the first time, quenched our thirst and had a small snack. Then follows a nice, partly somewhat exposed ridge path to the central peak of the Stol Ridge - Brinica (Monte Briniza) - 1636m. We ascended about 900m. We continued to the end of the main ridge where we then descended comfortably via a mule track to the place Viskorš (Monteaperta), where the bus was waiting. This place was almost completely destroyed in a devastating earthquake a few years ago. All buildings were newly built. Photos follow.
Arrived at the start of the trail to Brinica. This is the central peak in the Stol ridge between Kobarid and Gemona in Italy.1
The direction shows the end of the ridge, where that big cross is and the descent to Monteaperta - in Slovenian Viskorša.2
The path runs for two hours through deciduous forest - no. 710. It gently ascends continuously. We must overcome about 900 m of elevation gain.3
This is what it looks like.4
Sometimes unknown peaks to me appear on the right.5
After about two hours of moderate hiking with some three stops we arrived at the ridge saddle.6
The saddle is marked like this.7
8
At the saddle a view opens to the right to the chain of peaks.9

12
That is Lopič, where we were last year.13
To the south is the valley-settlement Viskorša, where the bus will wait for us. Down there is still a long way.14
We go along the ridge, which is very rugged to the central peak of the ridge - to Brinica.15
We simply enjoy it.16
On the ridge one walks somehow two hours.17
Between ridges.18
We arrived at Brinica - 1636 m, there is a stamp and summit logbook.19
The ridge path does not disappoint, it rewards us with beautiful mountain flowers. Now all rocks are wrapped in yellow. Avrikelj is really at home here.20
We arrived somehow at the end of the ridge, where there is a huge cross with markers and stamp and logbook.21
22
Now along the comfortable mulatiera on path 711 into the valley.23
It starts very pleasantly. After a solid hour we come to the bushes, which soon turn into deciduous forest.24
We are already right in front of the settlement. Refreshment at the spring.25
We are at the destination. - information panels.26
A few years ago there was a severe earthquake here that almost completely destroyed the settlement. Apparently only this church tower remained intact. Here the bell towers are like this.27
The most beautiful rozce of the tour - prealpine grebenuša - I saw them for the first time.28
Surprise - common goldenroot.29
Second surprise - yellow hellebore.30
Fourth surprise - Pyrenean houseleek - very rare. I already found it on our side of the Julians.31

Gran Monte is the central part of the Stol Ridge, Brinica is probably its more important goal, although the nicest part is precisely wandering along this wonderful ridge, which offers stunning views of the surroundings, and the flowers that enrich the ridge. We were given the sight of a white-headed buzzard gliding leisurely, and not just once. A very special energy spreads along this ridge!
A few of my photos from this trip, which Velkavrh has already described.

You really were a whole bus full, but obviously too few to chase away all the snakesvelik nasmeh. A couple of minutes after we met you on the ridge, there was a strange little snake on the sunny trail - I think a young viper. What surprised me most was the color (yellowish)zmeden with a very prominent pattern.

I've wanted to go for a long time, if it were only a bit closer.... The drive to the starting point in the village of Viškorša is already quite a little journey... but in the end you realize that every kilometer is worth it.... The best time to visit Brinica is spring or autumn. In spring it's supposedly the most beautiful when crocuses bloom, in autumn the views are usually better and clearer, especially if you catch a beautiful day like we did. And since crocuses bloom elsewhere too, but the views are exactly like this only from Brinica and nowhere else, we chose autumn. Well, almost winter already. But yesterday it was sunny and warm on the ridge like mid-September. Only where the path turns to the north side of the ridge, there was ice all day and you had to step carefully so as not to end up in the valley too soon by accident... The day couldn't have been nicer... nasmeh
Starting point in the village Viškorša...1
Map with the drawn circular path...2
For the ascent we chose a comfortable mule track...3
If there are no flowers, at least rose hips contribute to the colourfulness of the path... :-)4
We could hardly wait to reach above the tree line...5
Deep below Viškorša, where we started...6
There up on the ridge it ascends...7
Impression from the path...8
View towards Matajur...9
I understand encountering dead nettles everywhere... but scabious?10
...and completely fresh leaves of cyclamen? Will it bloom already in December?11
The view stretches across the ridges...12
... all the way to the sea...13
Towards the Križ saddle...14
At the saddle the view opens to the northern side...15
Close-up of Vrh Krnice and Visoki Kanin...16
Onwards along this ridge...17
On the ridge...18
...and a snapshot from the path...19
View towards Triglav... mists over the valley...20
The ridge is not demanding... here and there it becomes narrow... :-)21
The summit is already visible...22
View back... the ridge goes all the way to Stol...23
View of the Muzcev ridge...24
...and on Matajur...25
...and view ahead...26
While continuing, still looking back towards Brinica...27
The initial part of the descent from the ridge is really steeeeep... :-)28
Days are short... the moon is still pale blue in the sky...29
...we two are chasing the last views on the sunny promontory at Viškorša... before plunging into the forest and descending back to the starting point...30

If anyone plans to visit Brinica from the north, I let them know that the road in Učje (after the turn-off to Rezjanski Skutnik) to the Tanameja saddle is closed.
The storm in recent days has done its damage, which we also found out on the way to the reserve peak-Rezjanski Skutnik.

On Friday after a long drive over Vršič and Učje I arrive at Na Mejo. I leave the bike at the sign for path 712, as I'll descend there, and ride another approx. 4 km to the start of path 710. Ascent to the ridge and then right to the summit M. Contesa and return and further along the ridge first to Brinica and then on to Breški Jalovec. Descent (with some ascents in between) via path 712 to the bike and then down to the car.jezik
The entire path is well marked and normally passable, the path along the ridge to M. Contesa is less visible and goes right among the pines, which I figured out when returning back along the ridge.

From the north side to Brinica, snow all the way 5-10cm, carried ice axe in hand which was just right. Returned the same way back.
