5-day trip through the Kamnik-Savinja Alps

Hello,

at the end of this month I plan to go on a five-day mountain trip with a friend. For now we have the Kamnik-Savinja Alps in mind, since we'd like to include Logar Valley too. I quickly planned what you see below in the picture.

The trip is planned to be as varied as possible, so ascent and descent on different paths.

Since I don't know these routes very well myself, I'd need some additional info. I'm most worried about the path from Skuta through Turkish Gully to Logar Valley. My friend isn't among the most experienced in the mountains (hasn't done a longer very demanding path yet) and I'm afraid the mentioned descent would be too tough. Option is to do the trip in reverse, so up the tougher path. I'm interested in your experiences mainly with this tour and if you have suggestions for path changes.

Thanks and best regards!

The descent from Skuta is equally demanding as the one through Turkish Gully, but there's less crumbling terrain there. In the gully you can bypass the lowest steepest wall section via scree...

I think it'd be better to plan the route starting from Logarska-Okrešelj-Kamniško sedlo-Brana-Kotliči-Turska gora-Skuta-Kokrsko sedlo-Grintovec-Mlinarsko sedlo-Češka koča-Ledine-Jezersko sedlo-Okrešelj-Logarska....just calculate each daily tour separately-you have five huts, plus two bivouacs in between LP.

I'd skip T. gully on the third day and not go to Frischauf. Over Turska gora and Kotliči to Kamniško sedlo (sleep). That way you don't lose elevation, the tour is about 1 hour longer, but second day you have time advantage.nasmeh

I agree with panda. Best to connect Skuta via Turska gora and Kotliči to Kamniško sedlo. Nice tour.

A few years ago I took four days for traversing KSA. If I did the route again now, I'd do it like this:

1. day - Kamniška Bela - Presedljaj - Konj - back to Presedljaj and to planina Korošica. Time to also bag Lučkega Dedca. Sleep at Korošica.

2. day - Ojstrica - Planjava - Kamniško sedlo. Overnight.

3. day - Brana - Turska gora - Skuta - Štruca - Dolg hrbet - Mlinarsko sedlo - Kokrsko sedlo. Overnight. (This one's long. Plenty of fluids!!)

4. day - Grintavec - Kočna - Češka koča

5. day - Jezersko sedlo - Rinke and over Žmavčarje back to valley.

Whatever and wherever....safe steps and good luck nasmeh

The above suggestion is also good. The 3rd day is identical to what I hiked a few days ago. Very nice tour, but as panda10 writes it's long, so good fitness is mandatory. Also think with your buddy about the difficulty. Traversing Dolgega hrbta is exceptionally beautiful, one of the best experiences for an experienced mountaineer, but if your buddy has no experience in the mountains, it might be a bit too much for a beginner. Think carefully before setting off on the tour. The guide 55 secured paths (A. Mašera) might help you, where paths over Dolgega hrbta, Kremžarjeva to Kočna... are described and you will better judge if the path is suitable for you. Otherwise you can plan the tour without them.

Hi!

I'd suggest thinking about day 4. Why climb back to Okrešelj and then continue to Brana?
What if you reverse a bit and still sleep on day 3 at Koča pod slapom Rinka (i.e., when you arrive from Skuta).
Then go to Koča na Klemenči jami and continue on Kopinškova pot to Ojstrica (if descending via Turski žleb path, this uphill probably [judge yourself] not too hard).
From Ojstrica descend towards Korošica and branch to Škarje. Then continue to Planjava (can visit Lučko Brano 2244 m before).

Descend to Kamniško sedlo where you sleep.

Last day go to Brana (1h) and then descend to Kamniška Bistrica.

Pictures and description for the path you'd do on day 4 ("Logarska dolina - Ojstrica - Škarje - Planjava - Kamniško sedlo") here:

Thanks everyone for quick replies.

Somehow the starting point in Logar Valley doesn't suit me, but only due to difficult access (from the coastal direction or Ljubljana). Also a bit skeptical about the path over Žmavčarje (unmarked path - is it still well visible?). If avoiding Turški žleb the route per your suggestions could look like: Kamniška bistrica-Kamniško sedlo and Brana (1. day), Kamniško sedlo-Turška gora-Skuta-Kokrsko sedlo (if I understand correctly descent from Skuta possible on two paths, besides Dolgega hrbta also easier?) (2. day), Kokrsko sedlo-Grintovec (via Streho) then over Mlinarskega sedla to Češka koča (3. day), Češka koča-Jezersko sedlo (assume via Žrela?)- koča pod slapom Rinka (4. day), back to Kamniško sedlo and valley (maybe Planjava too) (5. day).

Second option, which I like even more, is to skip Logarska dolina and include Ojstrica and Korošica, as panda10 suggested. Would look probably like: KB-Kalška gora-Kokrsko sedlo (1. day), Grintovec (up via Mlinarskega sedla, down via Streho) (2. day), Kokrsko sedlo-Skuta-Turška gora-Kamniško sedlo (3. day), Brana-Planjava-Ojstrica-Korošica (4. day), return to KB (Konj on the way) (5. day).

@Močerad Thanks to you too for detailed reply, but we'll probably cross out Turški žleb and Logarska dolina, so Kopinškova to Ojstrica will have to wait for another time. nasmeh

A few years ago my trip:
1. day: Kamniška Bistrica - Žagana peč - Kokrsko sedlo - Ovnov čir - Kokrska Kočna and Jezerska Kočna - Dolci - Ovnov čir - Kokrsko sedlo (sleep);
2. day: Kokrsko sedlo - Grintovec - Mlinarsko sedlo - Dolgi hrbet (not necessary to cross, can bypass on lower path) - Skuta - Turska gora - Kotliči - Kamniško sedlo (sleep - long tour);
3. day: Planjava (can do Brana before and back) - crossing Lučke babe - Škarje - Ojstrica - Kocbekov dom (sleep or not) - Kamniška bistrica;
4. conditional: Kocbekov dom - Kamniška Bistrica

Maybe I helped you a bit.nasmeh

Just a warning, if your friend is not used to secured climbing paths, then the path over Kotliči to Turska gora might be a problem too, and likewise the ascent to Skuta from Turska gora direction, secured only with pegs. Dolgi hrbet can be skipped, since the normal path runs below it.
From Češka koča the path through Žrelo is officially closed, because the chains were torn by snow....not sure if it's recommendable to go there, since stuff is always "flying down".
In short....better one day less, than the crossing becomes a calvary. Good luck!

Hello.
Don't worry about the path over Žmavčarje, as it's well visible and you can't miss it. It's quite steep though and in wet places it can be dangerous for slipping. And you get directly to the new bivouac below Skuta. From the bivouac you're then in a good half hour at the starting point for Skuta, Rinka or Turska gora.
I would also skip the hut below Rinka waterfall, because after a few days of hiking you two surely won't manage to descend that much into the valley. Better to sleep at Okrešlj.
Panda's plan really appeals to me and I would choose it myself if I were to hike such a long tour again.
Good luck
