Serbia, Midžor 2169m

After successfully conquering Musala in Bulgaria (see description Bulgaria, Musala) we still had the ascent to Midžor, the highest peak of Serbia (if we don't count Kosovo!). We chose the mountain hut under Babin Zub as starting point. We reached it from the Pirot side past the ancient village Topli Dol, where almost all houses are still like 100 years ago. That we are somewhat in the present is shown by individual satellite antennas, some old car in front of the house and ragged asphalt, of course only to the end of the village at 900m above sea level. From here onwards hair-raising drive on bad dirt road and ascent with off-roader to cca 1600m, from there short descent to the mountain hut.
Rest and same day ascent to 8km and less than 600m elevation distant Midžor. It would be possible to drive with jeep some 50m below the summit itself, but since we are real mountaineers, we didn't do that and did the very undemanding ascent on foot. From this perspective Stara Planina is also a real paradise for mountain bikers. Despite approaching winter we found among dry, brown grass also some specimens of blooming flowers. Weather ideal for such tour, only on top it was blowing hard, so we decided for longer stop rather 10 minutes below summit, next to ruins of former guard post. Along Midžor ridge runs namely the Serbian-Bulgarian border, which was once strictly guarded. After this all-afternoon tour we returned to mountain hut Babin Zub, dined there, slept in room with own bathroom and TV, had breakfast in the morning and drank some more; all that for ridiculously small sum, despite the mountain hut being in middle of extensive ski areas, that next to it is hotel and some km away another one. No wonder they have every winter (and also summer!) season lots of Slovenian visitors.
From in front of the mountain hut we drove on asphalted road to Knjaževac and then onwards towards home.

Well, it's been about a week since the ascent, but still a couple of infos. We also set off from Pirot. To the parking lot exactly 65 km. We went along the road towards Knjaževac and turned sharply right in Kalna settlement, then along a very winding and occasionally very narrow and poor road (but really only on shorter sections) to the mountain hut under Babin Zub. Drive takes about 1 hour 20 min.
At the mountain hut there's a small parking lot, from there friendly staff directed us another 500m along gravel road to a cabin with nice view, where we park.
Weather was pleasantly warm and clear and from the cabin we could hear nice music, which told us we won't stay thirsty upon return from the top.
Those about 600m elevation from start to summit don't look much. Only by the time needed to summit and the distance kilometers marked on signs along the path it shows the goal isn't as close as it might seem at first glance. Hard to say how long "normal" would take to top. Group is as fast as its slowest member. I think we took about 2.5 hours of slow, really slow walking.
We met two Slovenians with CE plates, there were also Austrians, Poles, Czechs (yeah, can't go without them, hahaha) and of course some locals.
Wind kept increasing all the way, at the top it was impossible. Actually I don't remember such wind even at home. And really only right below and at the top. Anything dropped from hands would literally fly to Bulgaria. Ridge is quite steep on Bulgarian side, but just enough to retreat to Bulgarian side from the hurricane wind, where it was complete opposite compared to one meter across the border.
Views were really phenomenal all around, but can't compare to ours in similar conditions. Wind did its thing, so we quickly return to the cart track about 50 elevation meters below summit and back to start.
Upon return to start the gang goes for hydration, I continue to Babin Zub. I climb straight up the steep ski slope and to viewpoint takes about 20 min. Descend same way, where smiling gang awaits me.

The trail took me again to the highest peak of Serbia. Actually I hesitated between the second highest Dupljak and Midžor, but at the junction chose the latter. Just this time to the summit via ridge variant. Since morning departure from parking was early enough, I had sunny and warm weather. Almost no wind. Not even on the ridge, where I expected it. Last year it blew so strong we had to hold backpacks so they wouldn't fly away.
Somewhere in the second half of the path I catch up with a larger group of local hikers, with whom we chat on top later. They even offered me a ride to Musala start. But alas, Musala will have to wait until… zadrega
Reach summit in 1.5 hours and was alone for a while, then the mentioned hikers started arriving. Next half hour we chat about everything, each knew someone from Slovenia, but sadly I knew none velik nasmeh. Some mountain guides and it surprised me that they didn't know their second highest peak Dupljak (2032m), which is good 1-2 hours from Midžor. Also this time visibility despite nice weather not ideal. Wanted views right to Bulgaria, but as said.. mrk pogled
In shade under concrete pillar marking summit rested friendly dog, no one knew where it came from. And when I left back, it followed me right to start. Of course I pitied it, for good company got whole sandwich, rinsed with water from my hands. And as it appeared, so it disappeared at the end zavijanje z očmi.
Locals like to say wild horses graze on the plateau and luck needed to see them. And while descending, it stopped and stared into distance, to the ridge under which our path runs. Only then I saw those "wild" horses. Well, that they weren't, I realized later when closer to herd and heard bell eek velik nasmeh. So much for wild horses jezik.
On the way stop also at Žarkova Čuka, peak about 50m above path (though sign said 100m), 1848m high. At foot of Čuka "parked" car which blueberry pickers use. Nearby another SUV parked. In car full buckets of blueberries. And indeed lots everywhere. Since dog stopped in shade by car, first thought it's theirs, but panted with me to top. Tongue dragging on ground so thought he'd step on it. On Čuka watered it like my own.
Just half hour to start and that's it for today.
Whole path really hot. And closer to start, more thought about pool by inn, how to convince owner to refresh upon arrival. Pondered all way how, since no swim trunks. Well, when tested water temp, desire gone instantly. Yeah, had to stick to ice cold beer. Though pic would be phenomenal velik nasmeh. Would fit "unbelievable but true". Consoled that no one swam before or after me.
Also info that since last year they resurfaced quite some km of road, esp. upper part, some km still needed jezik.
At end some "flowers" in pics, seems normal here. Don't dare think what would happen to hribi.net portal if at home eek Probably crash in half hour from comments. Attach links so no one thinks not true.. pics public.

Since Serbia not separate on forum I'll put here report on tour to highest peak of Vojvodina -that's Gudurički vrh-641m. To start in Gudorica village we came from Vršac. Start was beautiful monastery. To summit walk less than two hours. Up there tower, but collapsing -shame. Summit in middle of forest no views. But more fun in Gudurica village itself, where at half-Slovenian family we tasted excellent wines. Also saw local museum about Slovenians in these parts.

For long I had wish to visit highest peaks of almost all Balkan countries. So with friend Boris started journey 15.07.22 at 3.30 from SG. Estimated drive to highest peak Serbia (if not count Kosovo on Stara planina) ca 11 hours. But of course counted, since waited two hours at Serbian border, and due to accident more than hour on highway at Paraćin. Because of that left highway and drove to Zaječar then via Bojevac to Knjaževac and on to Babin Zub. Total drive 14.5 hours. To not return from top in dark hurried a bit and reached summit in 1.5 hours, return 1 hour 15. Drank beer in hotel at Babin Zub and went to Pirot for rest. Drive to Pirot took one hour.

Road up to the hotel OK?

Yes, I know where the hotel is and which one. I'm just interested if the road is normally drivable, asphalted?

Three years ago the road was normal, probably hasn't changed until now. Also the road to the hut under Babin Zub is asphalted, a bit further to the bife where the starting point for Midžor is, the road is gravel and also drivable.

Can one already park earlier somewhere around the hut or hotel?
like
felix28. 10. 2025 10:13:50
You can park at the mountain hut or at the intersection: hotel - babin zub or somewhere in between. From the hotel to the mountain hut is cca 4 km. As mentioned, the nearest parking for Midžor is bife Plaža.
