To reach the starting point, from Matrei in Osttirol on the Felbertauern road, turn left into the Virgen Tal valley and drive to Hinterbichl or the hamlet of Streden, where the main parking lot is. They charge parking fees in season. There, find the path into Maurer Tal valley, which leads to Essener and Rostocker Hütte, 3 hours walk, at least that's what the signs say.
After a morning ascent of Grossglockner, I reached the hut in just over two hours and stayed overnight. Early morning, I set off across vast snowfields to Reggentörl, turned right onto the western slopes of Umbalkees glacier and climbed to the summit. Descended via SE slopes over Simonykees glacier to the hut and then headed down the valley in real summer heat.
Ascent of Simonyspitze is a partly glaciated tour, which can be significantly harder in summer than now when everything is snow-covered.
