MPO (Mljet Hiking Circuit / Mljet Mountain Loop)

MPO is a connecting trail from Pomena to Sobra, which I started at its end due to logistical reasons. The same reasons also caused me not to divide it into several stages as recommended in the booklet (logbook and guide) and websites (e.g. http://www.mljet.hr/?l=hr&ispis=staticna&id=125&iskljuci=da ), but to do it in one go. Ascent should be around 2000 m, trail length 43 km, though my phone measured both a bit less.
The bus you can take in Pomena and get driven through several villages to Sobra or Zaglavac harbor runs every morning, but doesn't stop in the same villages every day, departure time also varies (Year 2018: MO, WE at 5.00, TU, TH at 4.45 from in front of Studenac store in Pomena. Don't know for other days. Departure from harbor back to Pomena at 15.50. Bus picks you up anywhere on main road, just signal the driver you want to ride.)
On October 9th I took it to Lanterna tavern in Sobra, started the trip at 6. First climbed steep narrow alley where many eyes peered at me from dark - too many tomcats on the island. When I stepped on main road in upper village part, realized bus passed here shortly before; well, start is start so went to coast motorized first, back uphill on foot.  From main road turned to well-followable marked trail leading to highest island peak Veliki grad. Rises 514 m above sea and offers super views. Continuation to Špilja (cave) Ostaševica and further to Blato village went, like initial part, mostly through blackberry forests, while on second half (western part) of trail leading over Veliki Planjak, under stone walls with bit scary name Zle stijene, to Montokuc with fire watchtower, to Cape Lenga and back to national park kiosk in Pomena, Aleppo pines provided shade. Finished Odiseado after exactly 13 hours, when sun already 'sunk into sea'.
Didn't meet people on trail, but hoopoes, wild pigs, mongooses, wild goats and many butterflies and house martins kept company.
Stamps found at 16 of 20 places listed in booklet (missing at KT: 1, 15, 18 and 20).

With guide Izij we headed to Mljet from 5 to 10 October 2019, 62 participants. First day with stop and sightseeing of Dubrovnik beauties. Then four wonderful days for nature lovers on Mljet. We walked the nicest parts of Mljet mountain trail, which is 43 km long, over 2,000 m elevation, now extended even more, in some parts very steep... We enjoyed ascent to highest peak Veliki Grad 514 m with views to Pelješac, all way to Lastovo. Descended to Odysseus cave, bravest swam. One day to Cape Lenga, Small and Big Lake, to St. Mary island. Next day pleasure with hike along peaks, Montukuc, Veliki Planjak, views and nature fantastic. One day dedicated to eastern Mljet coast, climbed Planjak and descended to Saplunara beach and Blaca. Accommodation, food and hospitality in Hotel Odisej in Pomena excellent. On return also walls in Ston on Pelješac, buying mandarins from Neretva valley and farewell to friends and to new adventures, to Brač...
