Access to the starting point:
Follow the motorway through Austria and on through Germany towards Munich. Leave the motorway at Siegsdorf and continue south towards Ruhpolding. Approximately 3 km further on, you reach the village of Laubau, where a signpost directs you to the left to a large parking lot in front of the Holznecktmuseum Ruhpolding.
Path description:
From the parking lot, direction signs point south. After 800 m, the initially asphalted road turns into a dirt road and we follow it to the mountain pasture Schwarzachen Alm (755 m), 3 km away. The dirt road continues straight ahead, and we turn right onto a path that winds alongside a stream. After a few minutes we reach a fork. Both paths lead to the top of the Sonntagshorn. Continue along the left-hand path, which climbs gently at first, parallel to the Hinteren Kraxenbach stream bed. The valley through which the stream flows soon takes on all the characteristics of a gorge, with precipitous cliffs, pools and waterfalls. After a good hour, cross the stream and continue steeply along the right side of the stream in the keys. A wonderful view of the gorge opens up before us, over which the stream falls in four waterfalls. A few minutes of knee-biting follow, after which the track lays down for a while. A short switchback leads to beautiful pools and a waterfall. Here the track crosses the stream again, then turns sharp right and continues above the waterfall, steeply through increasingly sparse forest to the outlet of an extremely vast and steep scree field. Over this, the path leads to an undistinguished notch, from which it continues in a switchback to the south-eastern shoulder of the Sonntagshorn and then steeply up to a grassy summit with a cross.
