Access to the starting point:
From Slovenia, the upper Zilj valley can be reached via the Karawanks tunnel, via Korensko sedlo or via Trbiz via Megvarje/Maglern. Passing Schmohor/Hermagor, continue along the valley to Kotschach-Mauthen and continue into the Leszno Valley/Lesachtal to Obertilliach (from Ljubljana about 220 km). At the end of the village, at the signpost indicating the name of the place, take the narrow asphalt road with the tiny sign Porzehutte southwards. After a kilometre the asphalt ends. A good dirt road leads along the Dorfbach stream to the Klapf lake, and on Saturdays and Sundays to the hut. If the road is closed, it's about an hour's walk from the lake to the hut on a comfortable path that climbs in a couple of switchbacks over extensive pastures.
The Drava valley is a kilometre longer, past Spittal, Lienz and Sillian, but the road is a little wider here.
Path description:
From the hut, head towards the Porze notch, first gently downhill on a path covered with lush vegetation. Follow the well-marked trail throughout. At the junction with the trail that joins from the Klapfsee lake, continue to the right, and at the next junction the Carnic Highland Trail branches off to the right towards the Filmoor hut below the Great Kinigat. Our path hugs the hillside, decorated with a variety of alpine flowers and a mighty power line. A moderate climb takes us to the Porze (scharte) between Rosskarspitze (2511 m) and Porze (2599 m). In the scharte, at 2363 m, there is a small chapel and remnants of barbed wire testify to the Great War. Signs lead you along a sheltered path (Avstriasteig) into the limestone cliff. The path follows natural passages and short ravines, also winds along scree and a short grassy slope towards the summit, and is marked and equipped with a cable car at all times for morale and safety (in a few of the rougher places). Once on the ridge, follow the narrow, compacted track which rises steadily and not too steeply along the south side of the flower-covered ridge to the summit. There are two crosses at the top. On the highest point there is a makeshift cross, and on the adjacent, a few metres lower boulder with a cavern there is a huge memorial (peace) cross with inscriptions in several languages and a register. At the top, the Austrian route meets the Italian route from the Tilliacher Joch/Forcela Dignas saddle. Both routes are a detour of the Carnian High Alpine Route, which runs on the north side below the cliffs. The view is (easily) suitable for the altitude and the neighbouring mountains.
From hut Porze about 2 hours to 2 and a half hours.
The path to the notch is an easy marked path, the ferrata is a partly difficult marked path.
