Access to the starting point:
a) Drive to Dravograd, then continue to Maribor. After the 8. 0 km road marker, pay attention, because a little after the bus stop and the pedestrian crossing, you will turn left into the Gortina settlement (the exit from the main road is not marked). As soon as you leave the main road you will arrive in Gortina, and we then drive in the direction of Muta, turning left at the marked crossroads, where you will see the signs for Bistriški trench. The road then leads quickly into the Bistriški trench, through which you climb steeply. Shortly after the 6 km marker, you reach a small crossroads, where you park in a suitable place before the bridge.
b) First drive into Maribor, then follow the signs for Dravograd. Once you have crossed Mučka Bistrica, turn right a little after the Tuš store in the direction of Muta 1. The road leads to Muta, where you follow the priority road at the crossroads and turn left at a slightly larger crossroads, continuing towards Gortina. A little after the Muta settlement ends, turn right at the marked crossroads towards Bistriški trench. The road then quickly leads into the Bistriški trench, through which you climb steeply. Shortly after the 6 km marker, you will reach a small crossroads, where you can park in a suitable place before the bridge.
Path description:
From the starting point, cross the Mučka Bistrica over the bridge, then immediately after the bridge continue left, initially walking along the river. Before the abandoned Lipnik mill, the path turns right and starts to climb cart track. Higher up, you reach the pastures of a nearby farm, and the well-marked cart track leads you to the Lipnik farm, which you pass on the right-hand side. After the house, turn right onto the macadam road, and at the nearby crossroads, take a sharp left towards Pernice. The way ahead leads along a wider macadam road, where you pass individual farms and follow the signs at the crossroads. With fine views, we then reach a marked crossroads, where the markings for Pernice direct us slightly right, to cart track, which ascends crosswise and turns right at a higher altitude. After crossing the meadow, the path follows the edge of the wood for a while, then, once it has turned left, it enters the wood. Continue through the woods, crossing the road twice in succession higher up, and after a short cross-climb to the right, cross a small spring.
In front of the Porčnik homestead, the path turns left, then climbs to a slightly less well-marked crossroads at Razpotnikovo, where you continue along the left-hand cart track. Cart track returns to the forest and leads to the 1000 m height marker.
The track is laid here and leads us by the Church of St Simon and St Jude Thaddeus to an asphalt road, which we follow past the National Liberation Monument to a registration box located at the former mountain shelter at Knez na Pernice.
After the former shelter, we reach a crossroads and a crossroads, and we continue along the macadam road in the direction of Ojstrica (right path to Huhnerkogel past St. Urbana). The road we follow passes the Pernice Home and the sports ground on the right, and then leads us through the woods and past individual farms, which offer a beautiful view on the grassy hillsides. At the crossroads, we continue straight on towards Ojstrica or the Trail of the Giant Lime Trees, and after a while the trail leads us past the chapel and the National Liberation Monument.
At the first crossroads after the Lunčko farm, which is reached after about 15 minutes' walk from the farm (the Lunčko farm is located by the chapel and the NOB memorial), a forest road branches off to the right towards St Urban and the Bogatec farm, and from here we continue along the wider macadam road leading towards Ojstrica. Then we cross the Potoški graben, and before the Lonhtar farm we continue to the right on the marked path towards Huhnerkogel.
The way forward leads us on the wider newer logging trail, which climbs quite steeply, then go left on the marked path, which returns to the wider logging trail higher up. There are a few more forks, where you follow the markings, and then through a slightly more sparse forest you reach the hunting lodge Bivak Piramida.
Above the hut, continue to the right and follow the gently sloping path which crosses the gently sloping slopes. While crossing the path, it leads past the Wolf Stone, which was being hewn by a stonemason for a millstone, but was attacked by a wolf during the work, so the millstone was not finished. A little further on, we arrive at a marked crossroads where we join up with the trail that leads past St. Urban, and we continue to the left towards Huhnerkogel. We continue to climb along and along the state border for some time, and when the forest thins out further, we are joined on the left by a path that leads past the Doma na Košenjaku (Home on Košenjak).
Continue straight ahead and after a minute of further walking you will reach the top of Košenjak.
