Access to the starting point:
From Kranjska Gora, drive towards the Rateče border crossing, but only to the point where the road to Planica and the Tamar Valley branches off to the left (at the village of Rateče). The road, which climbs moderately, soon leads to the large parking lot at the ski jumping hills in Planica. From here, continue along the dirt road towards the lodge in Tamar, which you will then follow to the parking lot located near the mountain lodge.
The road to the Tamar valley is now closed. This extends the journey by about 1 hour.
Path description:
Follow the gauze towards the sign pointing in the direction of Jalovec. After a short walk through the forest, you will soon reach the vast snowfields below Šitami. Continue in the direction of the famous Jalovec ash-pit. The path ascends gently to the entrance to the frost, and becomes steeper at the frost. Once in the frost, it feels as if we are climbing between two towers. At the end of the climb, the fence is a little more upright again. Soon this anxious feeling passes and we peek over to the Primorska side. From the fence we turn to the right and soon we see a very clear division in the rock: the winter chimney. Through the winter chimney (it may be ice) we have about 20 metres of climbing to the start of the so-called Jalovec roof. The roof leads to the main ridge and from there to the summit.
Planica-Tamar: 30min, Tamar-Top of Ozebnik: 3h, Zimski kamin-Jalovec: 1h 30min.
Jalovec is a winter climb, the slope gradient is up to 40° (in winter chimney it is much more, 20 m). There are several avalanche spots on the route. In the ascender there is a risk of falling rocks, snow and ice chunks, it is recommended to climb along the wall. Descend along the ridge and then along the exposed traverse to Ozebnik. There is a high risk of slipping in the frost!
