Glungezer Hütte

Description of mountain hut:
Innsbruck's characteristic south-eastern skyline is formed by a distinct east-west mountain ridge. The whole ridge is very flat, almost like a high mountain plateau. It is possible to climb both the local peaks and the other peaks and spires that protrude from this "plateau". Among the summits, the Patscherkofel peak (with a 67 m radio-television transmitter, also visible from the valley) is the most prominent in the west, while the much higher Glungezer and Sonnenspitze peaks are in the east.
Access on foot to the peaks of this mountain group can be greatly reduced by using the two cable cars, which operate all year round. These are the Patscherkofelbahn and the Glungezerbahn. Between the two cable cars runs the popular Zirbenweg ('cemprin trail'; cemprin is a rare species of pine) (9 km, 3:00 h). The entire mountain ridge is famous for its lush alpine flora (entire rhododendron groves blom in early summer) and for its excellent views of Innsbruck, the Inn valley and the mountain range to the north of Innsbruck (the so-called Nordkette).
Glungezerhütte is a hut situated in the eastern part of the ridge described above. It is situated on a saddle between the Glungezer and Sonnenspitze peaks (both easily accessible from the hut; 10 minutes each).
Two other points of interest. The legendary mid-20th century mountaineer Hermann Buhl from Innsbruck started his mountaineering career on Glungezer - he got the climb with his father as a present for his tenth birthday. In the winter of 1964 (29.2.), in very bad weather conditions, a plane crashed into the eastern cliffs of Glungezer, killing all 83 people on board (memorial plaque on the summit).
