Parkirišče Stupfer v dolini Gaistal - Hohe Munde - western peak (po plezalni poti preko zahodnega grebena)

Access to the starting point:
From Ljubljana, take the motorway past Salzburg towards Munich. At the Dreieck Inntal multi-level junction, take the A93 towards Innsbruck/Kufstein/Brenner. On your return to Austria, continue on the Tyrolean motorway A12 to the B171 exit at the Telfs-Ost junction. At the large roundabout on the outskirts of Telfs, continue in the direction of the Interalpen Hotel and at the next roundabout take the first exit in the direction of Leutasch and Seefeld. Follow the road to Bairbach, where you take the ascending road towards Leutasch. Follow this road to the village of Klamm, where you turn onto the Gaistal valley trail. After a few kilometres of solid asphalt road, you reach the Parkplatz Stupfer (P2), where you park.

Near Rosenheim, it is also possible to continue westwards through Germany and reach the starting point from the north. In this case, at Bad Tölz, take the B13 road towards Garmish-Partenkirchen and continue towards B2/Innsbruck/Mittenwald near Krün. After crossing the German-Austrian border at Scharnitz, continue towards Leutasch and then Klamm. From there, follow the above directions.

Path description:
From the parking lot, continue along the dirt road that runs along the Leutascher Ache. Follow the rather sloping road until you reach a small bridge near the bottom of the mountain pasture Tillfussalm, where signs lead you into the wooded slope to the south. Continue for some time on a moderately steep ascent along a fairly scenic track through sparse high mountain forest. Soon we enter the open, ruined world below the ridge of the central part of the Mieming mountain group. We reach the broad ridge between the Hohe Munde and Hochwand peaks at the Niedere Munde (2059 m).

The ascent continues through a very enticing landscape, with rich views to the north and south. For a good hour we climb over the broad back of the Hohe Munde on a path that is only slightly steeper in places, until we reach the entrance to the climbing route.
A sheltered path, with the help of cables, initially leads under a sharp part of the ridge and leads to the ridge top. From here we follow the unprotected ridge for a short distance before entering the continuous protected path, which we initially descend by means of a rope for a few tens of metres. The descent is followed by a crossing of a narrow but well protected ledge, after which you enter the rugged rocky slope of the summit of the Hohe Munde.
The path here leads gracefully over a number of short jumps, and in one place is even slightly overhanging, but does not exceed difficulty B. Although the route crosses a hanging, precipitous slope, it is not overexposed anywhere, and offers wonderful views in depth towards the Inn valley.
After crossing the western slope of the Hohe Munde, we return to the main ridge of the central Miemingian group. A short steep section is still helped by a ropeway, but before the summit plateau the ridge widens and flattens out.
Once we reach the Hohe Munde's expansive summit plateau, it's just a few minutes of easy walking to the highest point and the cross at the lookout point a few metres below.

Although it is not the shortest route and it passes through some rather daring high mountain terrain, the protected route to Hohe Munde is one of the less technically demanding climbing routes. In terms of difficulty, it can be compared with the well-known and relatively close "Lustige Bergler Steig" on the Marchreisenspitze, which is slightly easier, or with the intermediate climbing routes in the Slovenian high mountains; however, I recommend wearing a helmet for the less experienced.

Rather than being technically demanding, this trip is an ambitious, scenic full-day mountain tour in a very attractive high mountain environment, best continued by first descending from the western summit along a marked trail, and then ascending slightly again to the eastern summit. From the eastern summit, which is 60 metres lower, it is possible to descend steeply but without technical difficulties to the Rauthhütte hut, from which you can round off the trip with a leisurely descent to the starting point at the parking lot.
