Access to the starting point:
Via Border crossing Rateče, take the road to Trbiž / Tarvisio, where you take the motorway towards Udine. Leave the motorway at the exit for Tolmezzo and follow the road to the above-mentioned place. From Tolmezzo, continue in the direction of Ampezzo and the Passo della Mauria mountain pass. The road then begins to descend and leads into the Cadore valley, where you continue to the right (Belluno and Cortina d'Ampezzo on the left) in the direction of Auronzo. After a few more kilometres we reach the next major crossroads where we turn right towards Misurina (left Tre Croci Pass). From here we follow the road down to a major crossroads where we turn left towards Cortina d'Ampezzo (right Austria). A few kilometres before Cortina d'Ampezzo we reach the point of Fiames. Just at the beginning of Fiames (by the signpost marking the town) you will see a small parking lot on the left (east) side of the road. On the right side of the road there is a hotel and a couple of other car parks.
Path description:
From the parking lot, follow the marked path through the forest in a south-easterly direction. After a short climb, you will come to a dirt road on the right. Leave the road quickly and head uphill to the left, following the signs "Ferrovia, Ferrata Strobel". Here the path climbs gently through the forest and then joins another dirt road (route 208), which is very popular with cyclists. Continue right on the gravel road and after a few metres the path branches off to the left towards the protected climbing route Via Ferrata Strobel. We continue along the dirt road until we reach a marked crossroads where signs direct us left into the woods on route 218 after the "Punta Fiames" signs.
The trail continues southwards through pine forests and the view of the Tofana mountain group and the Boite valley opens up several times. This path then leads to a crossroads where the path from Vera joins from the right.
At the crossroads, turn left and start climbing a little steeper. The path then leads us out of the forest into the dwarf pines and we start to get better and better views of the surrounding peaks. As we approach the base of the peaks, the path turns right and crosses the slopes to the south-east. On the way you will cross some torrential ravines, and then you will soon reach a marked crossroads.
Trail 202 leads down to the right towards Vera, trail 218 leads straight ahead, and we head left up trail 202 towards the Forcella Pomagagnon notch. The trail continues to climb along the scree along the increasingly rare dwarf pines and leads to another marked crossroads.
The Terza Cengia trail branches off to the right (only for the experienced), and we continue up to the left and look for a passage crossing a torrent bed (the cairns are helpful). The trail then climbs up the scree for a long time and then crosses a few more streams a few more times, but some care is needed when crossing them. From the path, which follows a wide gully below the precipitous cliffs of the Croda del Pomagagnon, we have a good view of the precipitous cliffs above us and of the Sorapiss mountain group. The path follows the scree along the ravine to the Forcella Pomagagnon notch, where the view opens up to the north towards the summit of Croda Rossa. Continue left at the notch and then cross the slopes on the north side of Punta Fiames in a gentle ascent. At the last part of the trail, it turns left and then climbs up the rocky slope to the viewpoint at the top.
Descend either by the ascent route or by a slightly longer but flatter route which descends from the Forcella Pomagagnon notch to the north side of the Val Pomagagnon valley.
