Cave del Mole - Koštrunove špice (via Forcella Lavinal dell Orso)

Access to the starting point:
From Kranjska Gora, take the Rateče border crossing to Trbiz/Tarvisio. In Trbiz, turn left towards Bovec and follow the road to the crossroads near Lake Rabeljsko. Here, turn right in the direction of the Nevea Pass/Sella Nevea. Follow this road, which is mostly ascending, to where a macadam road forks off to the right. At the turn-off there is a monument with a cross and a signpost on a tree with the inscription "Corsi". Follow the dirt road for a few more bends, then park in the roadside parking lot shortly before the barrier.

From Bovec, drive to the Predel border crossing, from which you descend to the Italian side. Just after Lake Rabelj, you will reach a crossroads, where you turn left towards Nevejeski Prevala/Sella Nevea. Continue as described above.

Path description:
From the parking lot, continue along the macadam road, which starts to climb in the keys. The road passes through a forest, so there is little view. Only occasionally do we get a view to the south and south-east. The road then turns left and begins to climb steeply northwards. A steep paved road then leads out of the forest to Viška planina (1530m).

At the bottom station of the cargo cableway, turn left and follow the road leading over mountain pasture. At the end of mountain pasture, signs then direct you to a footpath which initially climbs through the forest before leading you out of the forest and back onto the grassy slopes. Here the path turns right and runs northwards, soon leading to dwarf pines. Through dwarf pines we then start to climb a little steeper again and the view is getting better. Later, the path leads us out of dwarf pines and there is a shorter climb to a crossroads where we join route 625, which leads from the Nevejski saddle to the Corsi hut. At the crossroads, turn left to follow the signs for "Passo degli Scalini" and after a short climb you are back at the crossroads. This time continue to the right towards Škrbina prednje Špranje on route 626. The path climbs up a grassy slope for a while and then leads into a valley below the steep slopes of Punta Plagnis on the left and Koštrunove špice on the right. At the beginning of the valley the path becomes a little steeper and then there is a climb up to Škrbina prednje Špranje, which can be seen ahead of you as you walk along the valley.

At the notch where the trail junction is, continue right on the Anita Goitan trail. Here the trail becomes more difficult and climbs steeply up the grassy slope from the start. It continues on a gentle ascent from the western slopes of the mountain to the southern side. The slopes traversed in this part of the trail are very steep, so some caution is needed when walking. The trail climbs steeply a few more times and then gradually becomes less steep. When we get closer to the main ridge of the mountain, we will reach a less visible crossroads. At this point, leave the marked path and head towards the ridge. On the ridge, continue to the left (westwards) and soon you will see the Koštrunove špice summit with the military tunnels and the steps leading to the summit. The ridge trail descends steeply at first, followed by a steep climb up the stairs to the military tunnel just below the summit. The path to the top runs slightly to the right of the entrance to the tunnel and the first few metres are a bit of a scramble, followed by a short climb on rocky terrain to the top.
